Workshop & Capacity Building

Capacity Building Training on CO2 Storage Assessment in ASEAN region co-organized with USGS
Jakarta, 11-15 September 2023: The Asia CCUS Network Secretariat held a Capacity Building Training on CO2 Storage Assessment in ASEAN region co-organized with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The workshop was held on 11-15 September 2023, at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) office, applying hybrid setting. The invited trainers are Peter D. Warwick, Ph.D., Supervisory Research Geologist, and Sean T. Brennan, Research Geologist, both affiliated with USGS. The invited participants are geological experts, petroleum engineers, and other experts interested in CCUS from companies, governments, and research bodies from ASEAN. The workshop was held in hybrid setting, where participants from Indonesia is joining offline, and other participants from other ASEAN countries are joining online.
Participants from Indonesia includes representatives from DG oil and Gas, Geological Agency, Lemigas, BRIN, Medco E&P, and Universities such as Institut Teknologi Bandung and Universitas Gadjah Mada. Joining online was representative of PTTEP, Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), PETRONAS, Institute of Energy Vietnam, and Ministry of Mines and Energy, Cambodia.
Mr Shigeru Kimura, Special Advisor for ERIA President on Energy Affairs, ERIA, delivered the opening remarks for the workshop. Mr Kimura touched upon the importance of the capacity building training activity to accelerate the implementation of CCUS in ASEAN. CO2 Storage Assessment is an initial step in CCUS projects, which aims to calculate the amount of CO2 storage potential in a region. This capacity building hopefully can increase the number of studies for CO2 storage assessment in ASEAN region, to support the implementation of CCUS technology.
The 5-days training consisted of series of lectures, discussion, and presentation from the participants. On the first day, Dr Brennan delivered the presentation on the overview of CO2 storage assessment methodology being used and developed by USGS. On the second day, the participants presented on the potential storage assessment unit (SAU) in each of the participant’s working area. The third day discussed on the overview of USGS’ CO2-EOR methodology and mineralization feasibility research, presented by Dr Warwick. The fourth day’s topic revolves around CCS legal and regulatory framework, as well as a discussion on storage efficiency calculation methodology. On the last day, Dr Brennan discussed on the ISO/TC 265 standards, and its use during CCUS development projects. During the whole activity, the participants both offline and online was enthusiastic and actively engaged to the discussion.
